Physiotherapy in Plymouth
Our physiotherapist helps restore movement and strength after injury or illness, and helps you manage ongoing pain.
About physiotherapy at City Clinic
Physiotherapy is a regulated health profession. It helps to restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness, or disability. Physiotherapists use physical approaches like movement, exercises, manual therapy, and patient education. These approaches help to manage pain, speed up recovery, and improve overall quality of life.
Each care plan will be based on the patient's specific needs and will commonly include:
- Tailored exercises and stretches to build strength and flexibility
- Manual therapy, massage and joint mobilisation using hands-on pressure
- Advice and education on lifestyle changes and posture.
What physiotherapy involves
Physiotherapy is a degree based healthcare profession. A physiotherapist is trained to assess how you move, and to look for what is behind pain or restricted movement rather than treating the sore spot alone.
Treatment is active. Alongside hands-on care, your physiotherapist teaches you exercises to do at home and explains what is happening in plain terms. Your own part in the plan matters: the profession puts education and participation at the centre of care.
Who physiotherapy helps
Physiotherapists work with people of all ages and across many areas of health, from sports injuries to recovery after illness. The most common reasons to see one are muscle and joint problems, including back pain, neck pain, sports injuries and arthritis.
At City Clinic the focus is rehab, strength work and hands-on treatment: recovering from an injury, managing ongoing pain, or building the strength and confidence to move better.
About your physiotherapist
Physiotherapy at City Clinic is provided by Carla Cassidy. Carla qualified as a physiotherapist in 2023 and is registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, registration PH139932. She is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, the professional body for physiotherapists in the UK.
In her own words: physiotherapy “looks at the root cause of pain or limitation rather than just the symptoms. It blends assessment, tailored exercises and manual therapy to improve mobility, strength and everyday function.”
Alongside physiotherapy, Carla also offers sports massage and traditional lymphatic drainage massage.

Questions
Common questions
Is physiotherapist a protected title?
Yes. In the UK anyone practising as a physiotherapist must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing you can move in. Shorts are helpful for knee and hip problems.
What happens at a physiotherapy assessment?
It starts with a conversation about the problem, your history and your goals. Carla then makes a physical assessment of movement and strength. You leave with a plan agreed with you, combining hands-on treatment and exercises you can do at home.
Is physiotherapy only for injuries?
No. Many people see a physiotherapist to manage ongoing pain, to rebuild strength, or because they want to move better than they do today.
Will I be given exercises to do at home?
Yes, exercise is central to physiotherapy. Care plans commonly include tailored exercises and stretches to build strength and flexibility, with advice on lifestyle changes and posture. What you do between appointments matters as much as the appointment itself.
