Bowen Therapy in Plymouth
A gentle soft tissue therapy using rolling thumb and finger movements over muscles, tendons and fascia.
About bowen therapy at City Clinic
Bowen therapy is a soft, alternative touch therapy. It uses gentle rolling thumb and finger movements over muscles, tendons and fascia. Treatment may include short pauses of a few minutes between steps so the nervous system can process the input.
Bowen therapy is a complementary therapy. It is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. Our therapist will tell you when another discipline at the clinic, or your GP, is the better place to start.
What happens in a Bowen treatment
A Bowen treatment is made up of small sets of gentle rolling moves over specific areas of the body. The moves are made with thumbs and fingers over muscles, tendons and fascia, the soft tissue that covers muscles and organs.
Between each set of moves there are short pauses of a few minutes. The pauses are part of the treatment: they give the nervous system time to process the input. The touch stays gentle and light throughout.
About your Bowen therapist
Bowen therapy at City Clinic is provided by Anna Hugill. Anna holds a degree in Sports Science and is a fully qualified Bowen Healthcare Therapist. Her special interest is supporting the nervous system, helping the body move from a constant state of stress into rest, recovery and repair.
In her own words: “It's all about supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself, without force or pressure.” Her way of working is person-centred through and through.
Anna is a member of the Bowen Therapy Professional Association and holds the quality mark of the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC). The CNHC was set up with government support as a UK voluntary register of complementary healthcare practitioners, its register is approved as an Accredited Register by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care, and Bowen therapy is one of the disciplines it registers.

Questions
Common questions
Does Bowen therapy hurt?
No. The moves are gentle and light. Most people find the treatment relaxing, and many rest during the pauses between each set of moves.
Is Bowen therapy regulated?
Bowen therapy is a complementary therapy and has no statutory register in the UK. Our therapist is a qualified Bowen Healthcare Therapist and a member of the Bowen Therapy Professional Association.
Can I have Bowen therapy alongside my medical care?
Bowen therapy is a complementary therapy, not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. Our therapist will tell you when another discipline at the clinic, or your GP, is the better place to start.
How is Bowen therapy different from massage?
The touch is different. Bowen uses small sets of gentle rolling moves over muscles, tendons and fascia rather than continuous hands-on pressure, and treatment includes short pauses between each set of moves so the nervous system can process the input.
