About chiropractic at City Clinic
Chiropractic is a regulated, non-invasive and natural healthcare profession. It focuses on the function of the whole muscular and skeletal system, not just the spine, and how that affects health.
Chiropractors are qualified health professionals who have completed a four or five year full-time training. They can assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, including back and neck pain, sciatica, and symptoms such as numbness or tingling in the arms and hands.
Before starting treatment, your chiropractor will assess your symptoms. This shows whether chiropractic treatment is right for you and your condition, and which techniques are most likely to help. Chiropractors are trained to recognise when chiropractic treatment may not be appropriate. If it is not, they will refer you to your GP or another healthcare professional.
A profession regulated by law
Every chiropractor in the UK must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council. Registration is a legal requirement, not a choice. Registered chiropractors follow the standards set out in the GCC's Code of Practice.
Care is broader than adjustments alone. Chiropractors use spinal adjustments and other manual therapies, alongside exercise and lifestyle advice. The aim is to restore and preserve how the spine and musculoskeletal system work.
Your first appointment
The first visit starts with an assessment of your health. Your chiropractor asks about your condition, the relevant parts of your lifestyle, and your current and past health history. Then they examine you.
Before any treatment begins you get an explanation of the findings, the treatment options, and the benefits and risks of care. Costs and likely timescales are part of that conversation, and nothing starts until you agree. If your condition does not improve as expected, the plan can include referring you to another healthcare professional.
About your chiropractors
Chiropractic at City Clinic is provided by Samuel Harris and John Springard. Sam graduated from the Anglo European College of Chiropractic with a masters degree. His five years of education specialised in neurological and musculoskeletal disorders. He is registered with the General Chiropractic Council, registration 05423.
John graduated as a Doctor of Chiropractic from the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in 1983. He ran his own clinic in Chichester for 42 years before relocating to Plymouth. He is a Member of the British Chiropractic Association and a Licentiate of the Royal College of Chiropractors, and is registered with the General Chiropractic Council, registration 00174. His areas of special interest are neck pain, headaches, sciatic pain and the treatment of older patients.
